From trobar to tarab

Or troubadours in Andalusian gardens.

TROBAR, in Occitan – From rhyme to music, the troubadour is the one who finds it.
TARAB, in Arabic – From the emotional communion between musician and audience.

Originating in the heart of the 13th-century Mediterranean and the culture of al-Andalus, this programme ‘Du trobar au tarab’ navigates between the troubadour and Arab-Andalusian repertoires. Musical jousting, still alive and well in Spain (jotas), and the poetic jousting of the Maghreb will fuel the imagination of this concert, which will feature a lively, contemporary reinterpretation of some of the illuminations handed down in the Cantigas de Santa María. The Cantigas de Santa María are proof par excellence of a shared practice and rich artistic exchange between Moorish and Catholic musicians. The aim of this project is to reproduce these artistic exchanges, based on shared themes that reveal more than just a geographical area of exchange, but a genuine shared cultural background.
